iTunes 10.5 freezes…but here’s the fix

iTunes 10.5 freezes…but here’s the fix

Since updating to itunes 10.5 the sync hangs at  2 of 6 “preparing to sync”. I am running Windows 7. I did the winsock reset and it worked for me. So here’s how you do it:

  1. Start bar, then accessories, then RIGHT click command promt and run as admin
  2. Once the command prompt window opens, type in “Netsh winsock reset” at the end of the prompt. Like this:  C:windowssystem32_netsh winsock reset
  3. After it comes back “successful”, it will ask you to restart your computer. Do this.
  4. After the restart, start iTunes, DO NOT PLUGIN YOUR iPHONE/iPAD/iPOD YET!!
  5. Go to Edit > Preferences and click on Devices
  6. Check “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically” and click OK
  7. Now you can plug in your device
  8. Once iTunes recognizes your device, right clicked on your device and back it up that way first.
  9. And then performed a sync and all is well

  • Thank you so much for this. I got my 64gb 4S today and been tearing my hair out trying to work out what was up with iTunes 10.5.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it about 3 times, to no avail.
    This fixed my problem

  • Thank you sooo much. This was the fix for me also. It was driving me nuts trying to sync. Mine would freeze up while trying to backup, therefor I couldn’t update to the new os.

    • Power off your device and try to steps above again. Make sure you follow the step exactly as described. And if all else fails, take a 10lb ball peen hammer to device and then take it to apple care and tell them your 8 yr old kid push a 50 lb toolbox over on top of it. :). You’ll get a replacement!

  • Maverick, your a hero!
I spend more than a day – like 24 hours, I mean – with different iTunes versions to get it working with my work iPhone 4S.
I had a terrible slow syncing with the iPhone, no contact with iStore at all, and tremendously slow CD import.

It’s my first experience with anything starting with i, and I got really frustrated.

Thanks for putting this solution on the internet, it works perfect now!

  • Thank you so much! I couldn’t get iTunes to do anything. Since it is always such a slow, resource-hogging, piece of crap software, it was really hard to tell whether I just wasn’t being patient enough, or if it actually wasn’t doing jack-sh!t. After performing your winsock reset, it actually works – and at decent speed!

Wonder how long this has been the problem.

iTunes works fine for me until I sync or transfer my files on my iPhone 4 that it freezes at “Step 5 out of 5 transferring files”, etc. And waiting doesn’t work, I ‘ve waited for an entire day just in case my computer’s running slow. Please help?
For technical preferences, I’m running on a Vista.

  • This seemed to work at first. Then I went into Firefox and disabled the Quicktime plugin (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins tab). Restarted iTunes and it now works a treat.

  • This worked like magic for me. Im using Windows Vista and have itunes 10.7. Its been crazy as I got a new iphone5 and tried syncing it with data from my old iphone 3gs. Called up apple customer care and they asked me to 1st uninstall itunes. That did not help. Then they asked me to restore iphone5 to factory settings. My itunes woudlnt let me do that. Fianlly went to a another comp, used itunes and restored. Then came back to my comp and backed up and synced. Probs started again when I tried syncing my ipad2 with ios6 with my itunes. Would again stall at some point. I seriously feel that there is some prob with itunes10.7 and ios6 syncing.. never had it until these 2 were updated to current versions…
    .
Thanks to this trick, all my problems are solved!
